Grounding a fence system is often the most neglected element when constructing an electric fence. The fence line constitutes one part of the circuit, while the ground makes up the other. Together, they create an open circuit that is completed when an animal touches both. The fence line functions effectively as electricity flows through highly conductive wires, while the return pulse travels through the ground itself. The ground acts as a variable medium influenced by weather, geology, and the depth of the grounding system installed. In dry conditions, the ground has poor conductivity, so it is advisable to place the ground stake(s) in moist soil. We suggest using at least one 1-metre ground stake for any fencing applications, with a depth of at least 1 metre, as the topsoil is most prone to fluctuations. The performance of a fence can be enhanced by adding multiple stakes connected with wire, driven as deep into the earth as possible. Stakes should be spaced 2 metres apart.
